Learning Community Structure
Learning Communities typically include three linked courses across the fall and spring semesters. Courses in the program satisfy general education, major, and/or graduation requirements. One course each semester includes a Learning Communities Peer Mentor (LCPM) who supports students as they navigate their transition to university life.
Living-Learning Communities
Some Learning Communities offer a Living-Learning Community (LLC) option, which allows students to live together in campus housing while participating in the same Learning Community. By sharing classes, activities, and residential experiences, students have additional opportunities to build connections and engage with their community beyond the classroom.
While many students choose an LLC to deepen their sense of community, living on campus is not required to participate in a Learning Community. Both residential and commuter students can fully participate in community activities and events.
Engaged Learning
Learning Communities extend learning beyond the classroom through field trips, campus events, cultural experiences, service opportunities, and other activities connected to each community’s theme. Faculty, Learning Communities Peer Mentors, and program staff work together to create meaningful opportunities for students to connect with one another, explore new perspectives, and engage more deeply with campus life.
These experiences help students build community, discover their interests, and make connections between their coursework and the world around them. Along the way, students are introduced to additional opportunities for engagement at CSU Channel Islands, including undergraduate research, internships, leadership experiences, global learning, community engagement, and other high-impact educational practices.
